Vacuum plays an important role in the packaging industry, especially in food packaging. Air is extracted from the packaging by means of vacuum. This ensures the preservation of the quality of the packaged goods as well as a long shelf life.

Together with a foil, a bag or prefabricated tray, the goods to be packaged are placed into the packaging chamber. Which is then evacuated by a vacuum pump. Meaning that the ambient air together with the oxygen in the air are suctioned out. When the desired vacuum level has been achieved, the packaging parts are sealed together. The packaging chamber is now aerated to atmospheric pressure. Thus, the packaging foil is tightly pressed against the packaged good.

When it comes to packaging oxygen-sensitive, perishable food, modified atmospheric packaging is the process of choice. In this case, the chamber is aerated to atmospheric pressure with a protective gas instead of air.
