FAQ

What is a scroll vacuum pump?

A scroll vacuum pump is a positive displacement pump that operates without oil.

It consists of one fixed and one orbiting scroll. The orbiting scroll moves within the fixed scroll, and as it moves, voids occur at the inlet of the vacuum pump. Thus, the pumped medium is continuously conveyed from the outside through the spaces between the two scrolls. After compression, it is discharged at the exhaust, located at the center of the fixed scroll.

The oil-free operation makes scroll vacuum pumps ideal for applications requiring clean vacuum environments. They are used for various applications in industries ranging from rare gas recovery to analytics and R&D.

Are dry scroll vacuum pumps positive displacement pumps?

Yes, they are. A positive displacement pump is used to move and compress gas or air by repeatedly trapping a fixed volume of the pumped medium and moving it mechanically through a system. It maintains a constant flow and speed regardless of changes in pressure.

How does a dry scroll vacuum pump work?

Scroll vacuum pumps consist of one fixed and one orbiting scroll. As the orbiting scroll moves within the fixed scroll, voids occur at the inlet.

Thus, the pumped medium is continuously conveyed from the outside through the spaces between the two scrolls. Finally, it is discharged at the exhaust, located at the center of the fixed scroll.

The scrolls do not come into contact with each other or the housing. Thus, no lubricants or operating fluids are required in the compression chamber.

Vacuum generation of dry scroll vacuum pumps explained in three steps

1. Inlet

  • An orbiting scroll moves within a fixed scroll.
  • The pumped medium enters via the inlet.

2. Compression

  • As the orbiting scroll moves, voids occur at the inlet of the vacuum pump.
  • The pumped medium is continuously conveyed from the outside through the spaces between the two scrolls.

3. Outlet

  • After compression, the pumped medium is discharged at the exhaust located at the center of the fixed scroll.

Do scroll vacuum pumps need oil?

Scroll vacuum pumps do not need oil, as the two scrolls have a PTFE tip seal.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of dry scroll vacuum pumps?

Dry scroll vacuum pumps from Busch are robust and reliable. They have several benefits:

  • Fully hermetic construction
  • Low noise level
  • Minimal maintenance
  • Low heat emission
  • Oil-free operation

Vacuum pumps with this technology cannot handle chemicals that corrode or are incompatible with aluminum. Additionally, they are not suited for processes with a heavy particle load, as this can clog the voids that occur at the inlet of the vacuum pump.

How do I select the appropriate dry scroll vacuum pumps?

Several factors have to be considered when selecting the right vacuum solution. These factors vary depending on the application and the specific needs of your process.
