Vacuum Evacuation

Vacuum evacuation. The process of creating a negative pressure inside a closed physical space. By extracting ambient air or other gases.

Laboratory vacuum chamber for vacuum evacuation

How does vacuum evacuation work?

One of the most widespread applications of vacuum technology is the evacuation of physical spaces, for example vessels. Ambient air or other gases are extracted until a defined target pressure is reached.

Vacuum evacuation is a highly diverse application. Evacuation chambers are used in a large variety of processes. To conduct manufacturing or testing processes that would be impeded by the presence of ambient air, or by the presence of oxygen.

Typical examples where vacuum evacuation is used are process chambers in the semiconductor industry or space simulation chambers. But also the evacuation of vacuum furnaces or coating chambers.

Busch vacuum technology in vacuum evacuation

The required vacuum level varies according to the application. From low vacuum for clean rooms to high vacuum for silicon wafer coating in semiconductor production. The requirements for a suitable vacuum generator are thus very diverse. Key factors to consider when selecting a vacuum supply include the volume to be evacuated and the required ultimate pressure in the vessel.

With our extensive product portfolio, we cover the entire spectrum of requirements. Offering the perfect solution for all evacuation processes.

Learn more about vacuum evacuation

What is vacuum evacuation?

Evacuation is the process of emptying a physical space of any gas until a set target pressure is reached. In most industrial cases this gas is ambient air.

How does a vacuum evacuation system operate?

Vacuum evacuation is about safeguarding the quality of a material in a production cycle. A chamber is emptied of gaseous particles until the required vacuum level is reached. This ensures that material inside the chamber is at the optimum, unblemished condition needed to create a top-level product.

Where is vacuum evacuation used?

Evacuation chambers are used in various applications. They allow to conduct manufacturing or testing processes that would be impeded by the presence of ambient air, or, in some cases, by the presence of oxygen.

What are the advantages of vacuum evacuation over alternative technologies?

Vacuum evacuation is used in a wide variety of applications. The advantages of this technology are therefore extremely diverse. In forming and pressing processes, for example, vacuum evacuation leads to uniform three-dimensional pressure on the product surface. It is more comprehensive in terms of mold form or shape, as opposed to a pure pressing application. In food production, it can help preserve the product for a longer time. In thermoforming, vacuum evacuation can allow for energy savings.

What are the best vacuum pumps from Busch for the evacuation process?

R5 rotary vane vacuum pumps, MINK claw vacuum pumps and COBRA screw vacuum pumps are the best solutions for standard evacuation. For high vacuum evacuation processes, we recommend vacuum systems comprised of R5 or COBRA vacuum pumps in combination with vacuum boosters from the PANDA/PUMA family. For small volumes, we advise evacuation with ZEBRA rotary vane vacuum pumps.

What are some examples for the use of Busch vacuum technology in evacuation applications?

The following are evidence of the wide-ranging use of Busch vacuum technology for evacuation purposes:

  • Evacuation of packaging chambers in vacuum packaging
  • Evacuation of vacuum vessels
  • Evacuation of vacuum furnaces in heat treatment
  • Evacuation of coating chambers in surface coating
  • Evacuation of space simulation chambers
  • Evacuation of transfer chambers in wafer production
  • Evacuation of chambers for semiconductor production

What are the key points to consider when buying a vacuum evacuation unit?

Key factors to consider when selecting a vacuum evacuation system include the volume to be evacuated and the required ultimate pressure in the vessel.

Vacuum evacuation in the packaging industry

Vacuum evacuation in the food packaging industry
Vacuum plays an important role in the packaging industry, especially in food packaging. Air is extracted from the packaging by means of vacuum. This ensures the preservation of the quality of the packaged goods as well as a long shelf life.

Together with a foil, a bag or prefabricated tray, the goods to be packaged are placed into the packaging chamber. Which is then evacuated by a vacuum pump. Meaning that the ambient air together with the oxygen in the air are suctioned out. When the desired vacuum level has been achieved, the packaging parts are sealed together. The packaging chamber is now aerated to atmospheric pressure. Thus, the packaging foil is tightly pressed against the packaged good.

When it comes to packaging oxygen-sensitive, perishable food, modified atmospheric packaging is the process of choice. In this case, the chamber is aerated to atmospheric pressure with a protective gas instead of air.
