Busch (UK) Ltd. - Encouraging Women into Engineering

Telford, UK Reports from the Women’s Engineering Society indicate that only 6% of the engineering workforce in the UK is female. Busch (UK) Ltd is working hard to address this trend.

In 2014, the Engineering Construction Industry Training Board reported that the engineering industry had a significant skills gap in the UK which was forecasted to increase in the coming years. Further reports from the Women's Engineering Society indicate that only 6% of the engineering workforce in the UK is female. Busch (UK) Ltd. is working hard to address this trend and is committed to providing diverse and genuine opportunities for young people in the local area who are passionate about working within the engineering sector, regardless of gender.

Within the context of a global engineering apprenticeship programme, Busch (UK) Ltd. has been providing advanced engineering apprenticeships at its site in Hortonwood, Telford, for over two years. Two apprentices are now completing their final year. Furthermore, two new apprentices recently started their careers at Busch (UK) Ltd., including the first female apprentice, Danielle H. from Trench.

"I have always been interested in how things work; I was forever taking things apart and putting them back together again. When I told everyone I wanted to become an engineer people told me I couldn't because I'm a girl. This made me more driven and focused to achieve my goals. Now I have been given this opportunity, I am determined to prove myself as a key part of the team and to learn as much as I can."

Josh P., also starting his apprenticeship at Busch (UK) Ltd., added, "I think apprenticeships are so valuable and give young people the opportunity to earn whilst also developing their skills. I have also always been interested in engineering and I didn't want to go to six-form like everyone else. I'm really excited to be starting my career at Busch!"

Busch (UK) Ltd. is committed to addressing the skills gap within engineering and ensuring that the industry is seen as an equal, diverse and safe environment to work (read more).
