Many pupils are currently taking part in the STEM Challenge 2019 in the UK. This competition is run by local newspapers to boost student engagement with the STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths). Each school that has signed up to the challenge has been partnered with a mentor from companies or industry organizations. Busch (UK) Ltd. took care of six pupils from a school in Telford.

They started at our manufacturing plant in Crewe. The day kicked off with a presentation to provide them with an understanding of vacuum and liquid ring technology in general. A site tour showed them how our Dolphin liquid ring vacuum pumps are manufactured. The pupils then travelled to our systems building facility in Telford where they learned how the vacuum pumps are combined into tailor-made systems. Later, they received a demonstration of some practical applications of vacuum.

The STEM competition provides pupils with an insight into the world of industry. It shows how what has been learned at school can be applied into future careers. As part of the competition, pupils must design a prototype product, utilizing their STEM knowledge and also what they learned during their visit to a company. Furthermore, the product needs to have a positive impact on the environment. We can be curious about what the students will present after their visit to Busch (UK) Ltd. The young participants will start to build their prototype soon – ahead of the judging and awards event in July.
