Lely receives the 2014 “Innovation in Vacuum Busch Award”

Vacuum technology innovations of particular value to mankind and the environment

Busch Vacuum Solutions has presented Lely Holding S.à.r.l. with the “Innovation in Vacuum Busch Award”. This award recognises companies and individuals who have contributed vacuum technology innovations of particular value to mankind and the environment.
The "Innovation in Vacuum Busch Award" was presented by Dr Karl Busch in a ceremony held at the Busch main offices in Maulburg. The recipients of the award were Alexander van der Lely (Lely Group CEO), and Peter Smit (Lely Purchasing Director).
Busch is working with the world market leader and principal innovater of fully automatic milking equipment.
The Lely Group manufactures fully automatic milking equipment, and is the world market leader and principal innovator in this sector. Lely is active internationally, and has its main offices in the Netherlands, where the company was founded in 1948 to manufacture agricultural machinery. Lely first started working with Busch in 1992, when the first milking robots were developed. Since then Busch has supplied vacuum technology for all Lely milking robots. Fully automatic milking robots allow dairy farmers to milk their cows reliably and without manual intervention 24 hours a day and 365 days a year, an innovation which has radically altered dairy farming.
The innovative use of vacuum enabled Lely to improve the working conditions of dairy farmers and to provide higher standards of animal welfare.
This innovative use of vacuum enabled Lely not only to improve the working conditions of dairy farmers, but also to provide higher standards of animal welfare. The animals are kept in cowsheds which allow free movement and unrestricted access to pasture. Cows decide themselves when they wish to be milked, and the automatic milking process is less stressful for them than manual milking. In addition, modern milking technology helps to improve hygiene standards and production efficiency.
As Dr Karl Busch pointed out in his speech, Lely has been successful in using modern vacuum technology to establish an innovative product which benefits both dairy farmers and animals – farmers have an easier daily routine, and animals enjoy better living conditions. The improved standards of animal welfare mean that cows are healthier and happier, and so produce more milk. Dr Karl Busch concluded that Lely has created a win-win situation for farmers and animals that also increases milk production efficiency, motivating the decision to present Lely with the Busch Vacuum Innovation Award.
