Cavotec recognised with the 2015 “Busch Innovation in Vacuum Award”

Vacuum technology innovations of particular value for mankind and the environment

The MoorMaster™ mooring technology of Cavotec Specimas SpA has been recognised with the “Busch Vacuum Innovation Award 2015”. This technology uses vacuum to allow large container ships, tankers, freighters and ferries to moor in harbours simply, safely and rapidly – and without hawsers or mooring lines. The award was presented at the Busch main offices in Maulburg by Dr Karl Busch to the managing director of Cavotec Specimas SpA Patrick Rosenwald and the supply chain manager Dr Gianlucca Bisarello.
In 1963 Dr Karl Busch and his wife Ayhan Busch turned their idea of simpler, more efficient and user-friendly industrial vacuum technology into reality. Since then, their vision has given rise to many innovative products which help make our daily lives easier and more agreeable.
The continuous development of vacuum technology by Busch has influenced many other innovations.
The first Busch vacuum pump revolutionised the packaging market, and allowed many people to buy the food items they wanted for the first time. The first Busch vacuum pump revolutionised the packaging market, and allowed many people to buy the food items they wanted for the first time. The continuous development of vacuum technology by Busch has influenced many other innovations, for example in the semiconductor and plastics industries and in flat screen production. The objective of this development work was – and still is – to offer customers optimal solutions, both technically and economically. The close working relationship we have with our customers is the key to our success, as without innovative and future-oriented clients many crucial developments would not have been possible. In 2013 the Busch family decided to recognise companies and individuals who have contributed vacuum technology innovations of particular value to mankind and the environment.
Cavotec Specimas SpA meets these criteria completely. MoorMaster™ mooring technology was developed to allow large ships to dock safely.

Accidents with heavy hawsers and mooring lines continue to occur, all of which could have been avoided with MoorMaster™ mooring technology. Accidents with heavy hawsers and mooring lines continue to occur, all of which could have been avoided with MoorMaster™ mooring technology. In addition, the time taken to berth a vessel is drastically reduced. Large freighters generally take between 20 and 90 minutes to moor – with MoorMaster™ systems this can be reduced to seconds, and casting off can be accomplished in as little as 10 seconds. These time savings allow freighters and ferries to be unloaded more rapidly. Mooring can be conducted by one person by remote control, either from the ship’s bridge or by port personnel on land. Large freighters of up to 450,000 dwt (tons deadweight) or container vessels with up to 18,000 standard containers can be held securely without mooring lines by this new mooring technology. Cavotec MoorMaster™ systems are installed throughout the world, and all of them use Busch MINK claw vacuum pumps. These vacuum generators are ideally suited to this application, as they are extremely reliable and almost maintenance-free.
As Dr Karl Busch emphasised at the award ceremony: “Cavotec has worked very hard to find a suitable quayside solution that allows large ships to dock rapidly and securely. However, the main motivation for this development work was to avoid the accidents with heavy hawsers that continue to occur.”
Cavotec Specimas SpA is the third winner of the “Busch Vacuum Innovation Award”.
