Busch SVG Sponsors Jiu-Jitsu European Champions

Five team members of the Dutch Jiu-Jitsu U18 and U21 national teams are sponsored by Busch Semiconductor Vacuum Group B.V. (Busch SVG). At the European Championships in Pitești, Romania, all five achieved excellent placings, with two of them becoming European champions.

An attack from behind, a turn of the opponent and the attacker is on the ground. To bring an aggressor under control in seconds, their own strength is used against them: The unarmed self-defense system Jiu-Jitsu is based on the principle of winning by yielding. The origins of this martial art date back to 16th and 17th-century Japan. It is based on older Chinese and Indian fighting systems. In Europe, Jiu-Jitsu was introduced at the beginning of the 20th century.

Twenty-seven young athletes from the Netherlands participated in the U16, U18 and U21 European Championships in Pitești, Romania, located around 120 km west of Bucharest. Five of them come from Woerden in the Netherlands, the town where the Dutch sales company of Busch is located. All were sponsored by Busch SVG.

Two of the five team members from Woerden became European champions in the U21 men’s duo system, and two finished fifth in the mixed duo system. Senna Groeneveld, who took part in a European Championship for the first time, finished seventh out of 27 in the U18 men’s category up to 69 kilos and is now training to participate in the World Championships. He is currently ranked twelfth in the world in his age and weight category.

“We would like to thank Busch for their support of our European Championship participants. The sponsorship has contributed to the success of our athletes and made it easier for them to realize their dreams and passion for the sport they love,” says Anco Bulk, Coach at the Kintaiko Budoschool in Woerden, where the five sponsorship recipients train.

“With the sponsorship, we wanted to reduce the individual costs of the athletes, who are all still students, and support them in their ambitious goals,” explains Erwin Groeneveld, Operations Manager at Busch SVG.

Young athletes from a total of 28 nations came together to compete in the Olympic sport. The Dutch team won six bronze, one silver and three gold medals in total.
