Degassing of Steel

Vacuum degassing is an essential part of high quality steel alloy production, and is the only way to manufacture certain grades of steel used in the automotive, aerospace and railway industries. During the production process molten steel can become infused with excess amounts of hydrogen and carbon.

In the past, hydrogen removal required the metal to be cooled slowly, adding time to the manufacturing process. The modern method is to extract hydrogen under vacuum, removing imperfections that can affect the integrity or performance of the steel. Vacuum degassing to remove carbon not only reduces imperfections, it brings an additional benefit: low carbon steel is more ductile and thus more easily shaped by stamping and forming machines.

Busch degassing plants equipped with COBRA screw vacuum pumps are ideally suited to steel degassing applications, as they do not require steam as a working medium.
